But since it got off the ground more than 20 years ago, the neighborhood has grown up.

Sure, the community’s association CCRs may not suit your taste if you pine for old Victorians or custom builds.

But families, couples and singles who call Carmel Mountain Ranch home have created a vibe that is unique and warrants a blog, don’t you think?

The San Diego Union-Tribune can’t cover this place. Neither can the North County Times. And free weeklies? Hardly.

So I grabbed this URL and turned up a Web site.

The hope?

That people who live here and care help contribute news, announcements, complaints, successes, failures and all the daily doings that make up the fabric of CMR. While technically it’s part of San Diego, CMR could easily be a town with a pulse all its own.

When I moved here in 1993, I laughed at license plate frames the first developer, Presley Homes, handed out with abandon: “Live, Work, Play” the shiny frames called out from the backs of mini vans, mini pickup trucks (remember those?) and BMWs, among other suburban vehicles.

There was a bit of “living.” There was not much in the way of employers setting up shop in CMR to provide “working.” And “playing”? Only if you liked golf, softball, or a paid gym membership. The city’s recreation center had not yet been built. The library was a dirt lot.

Back when Pat & Oscar’s was simply Oscar’s and tucked in the Ralph’s Shopping Center, CMR was very much a work-in-progress.

Our CMR town may be built-out, but it forever changes as people come and go. After all, it’s people who make a house a home. Why should a neighborhood be any different?
